The Oregon Stars had a successful weekend in Salem for the NW Champions League Tournament. The Stars opened up pool play with a 78-66 victory over the Vancouver (WA) Grizzlies. In their second pool play game, the Stars handled ECBA White, 78-56, moving the Stars into the highest bracket.
The first round of the 8 team bracket featured a match up of two of the top teams in Oregon. The Stars beat PacWest Eugene 70-65 in a hard fought game. PacWest features four international players who live at the United States Basketball Academy located outside of Eugene. The victory set up a semi-final match up against the NW Panthers. The Panthers jumped out to a 9-2 lead, but the Stars battled back and won 74-72! Seth Erickson hit two free throws with 5 seconds left to secure the victory, giving the Stars a shot at the championship. In the final, five games in 24 hours caught up to the Stars who were beat by the Emerald City Basketball Academy Pioneers. The Stars are now 12-8 on the season.
The tournament wrapped up the four weekend NW Champions League that included stops in Salem, Boise and Tacoma. The Stars are back in action next week in the Northwest Hoops tournament in Hillsboro, OR.
